Fletcher Davis of Athens, Texas claimed to have invented the hamburger. According to oral histories, in the 1880s, he opened a lunch counter in Athens and served a 'burger' of fried ground beef patties with mustard and Bermuda onion between two slices of bread, with a pickle on the side.

New Haven resident Louis Lassen is credited with creating the first hamburger in 1900. Answering a customer's rush order for something “quick and delicious,” Lassen assembled a hamburger from ingredients intended for steak sandwich production.

The cheeseburger's genesis can be traced back to 1924 in Pasadena, California. It was the first time "The Original Hamburger with Cheese" appeared on a menu. The legend takes us to Colorado Boulevard (then Route 66), where The Rite Spot once stood and the cheeseburger was born. It cost a whopping $0.15.
